The Empire of Durendal once stood as the defining power in Welund, but after the fall of Emperor Roland one and a half centuries ago, the empire began to collapse upon itself. Roland left no heir to the throne, so the most powerful noble houses began launching campaigns to try to claim power for themselves. After several decades, the number of houses vying for control had grown from a small handful to well over a dozen. Now, most have abandoned hope that there may be any united governance of the land, and have satisfied themselves with clinging to whatever scraps of territory they were able to claim in the years after Roland’s fall.
Most cities now house a few noble houses that hold an uneasy alliance in order to maintain order. This arrangement has kept the nobles from making any outright declarations of war on each-other, but has done little to rebuild the empire.
